CATDOLL: Japanese netizens rated the most undesirable keywords in novels: Cheating and pretending to be cool is the most boring

As more and more light novels are adapted into animations, the presence of light novels is becoming stronger. However, there may be some keywords that make people feel boring after reading them. A Japanese netizen made a personal comment on this.

First: Cheat

If we talk about words that make people lose interest in reading, then cheat must be ranked first. Even if some of my favorite authors use this word in the title of their works, I will immediately feel disillusioned. Here, cheat, if translated literally, means "cunning" or "cheating", which corresponds to "improper behavior" in the game, and it is a word with negative meanings. However, I don't know why it appears so frequently in the light novel industry, and I don't understand it at all. If you just want Long Aotian, then wouldn't it be better to just say "the strongest"?

2nd place: NEET/Lonely

This mostly appears in works about traveling to another world. But can characters with this attribute be considered NEET/lonely when they arrive in an unknown world and are motivated and good at communicating with people? Although if they are really unmotivated or don't know how to socialize, they can't promote the plot and can't be the protagonist. And if a truly NEET/lonely person becomes the protagonist, it will seem very aggrieved and the plot will be meaningless. Anyway, in the final analysis, works that use "NEET/lonely" as keywords often do not meet this characteristic, so it's better to abandon them.

Another point is that many works nowadays are imitating "My Teen Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, As I Expected", so this is also the reason why I don’t watch it.

Third place: Different world/travel

There are too many reasons for being on the list, and it is already saturated. There is a very bad phenomenon in the entertainment industry: once certain themes become popular, everyone will follow suit regardless of everything. This is the case with the light novel industry today. Although there are some really interesting themes, it is too difficult to find really good works among them. And the "winning rate" is terribly low. In addition, many people may flock to this field when they think of "I want to write a novel", which leads to saturation.

When it comes to online novels, my words may cause disgust among everyone, but I still think that good works have actually been born now, and the current situation is "exhaustion".

Another thing worth noting is that recently online novels have been sold in large quantities in the form of single volumes. And the price is around 1,200 to 1,300 yen, which is much higher than ordinary light novels. As long as the fans of the online version = fixed consumer groups buy it, then it is easy to realize the business model. However, this approach is still not recommended for newcomers. Anyway, they are all titles like "Another World XXX", so I might as well spend the same money to buy two library books. After all, this way I can read for a longer period of time, which can also increase the probability of discovering a work I like. Besides, the wallets of the main audience of light novels, junior high school students (the audience seems to have become strange recently) are also very tight.

As a result, the publishing industry has gradually eroded the original pursuit of "fun" online novels, resulting in a small number of truly good works. ... I'm getting off topic.

Fourth place: weakest/last place/incompetent, etc.

After "The Irregular", similar works have proliferated. Fortunately, among the follow-up works, no work has been found that directly uses the title "XXX Irregular". The reason is the same as the second point. Although I like stories where the weak defeat the strong through hard work and training, in works with this kind of banner, the protagonist is rarely the weakest. The behavior of the strong pretending to be a pig and eating the tiger to seize the world is not touching at all. If you have to do this, it is easier to accept it if you say you are the strongest at the beginning.

Fifth place: Brave/Demon King

The reason is simple: it's saturated. About 1 or 2 years ago, you could see this kind of title everywhere. Although it seems that the mainstream has become another world or time travel, there are still many heroes/demon kings. I'm tired of those heroes and demon kings who rely on affinity to cheat money.

In addition, I don’t like works with too long titles (including “Is it wrong to expect a chance meeting in a dungeon?”, which I now think should be changed). However, considering that such a long title is used to distinguish it from those “different world XXX”, it is still acceptable.

Summarize

Although it is said that "a name cannot represent the entity", the current situation of too many titles like this still proves the phenomenon of the frequent emergence of similar works. Although I don't want to ask for "banning tribute works", in the face of countless works chasing trends and blindly imitating, I think there should still be some control.

However, it is not just the light novel industry, but also animation, variety shows, TV dramas and other entertainment works in various fields are similar, so it can be said to be an incurable disease. But even in the face of such a situation, I still hope to read "original" works.
