CATDOLL: EVA director says fans' love can save Japanese animation

Hideaki Anno, the director of Neon Genesis Evangelion, recently participated in a panel discussion with many industry professionals. During the event, he talked about his thoughts on the future of the animation industry and bluntly said that only the "love" of fans for animation can save Japanese animation.

At the beginning of the forum, a media asked: "Mr. Anno, you once said that the animation production system can only last for about 5 years." Anno smiled and replied: "I didn't mean to say that, but it is generally true." He also talked about the future of the animation industry again: "It's still very serious. But it's not hopeless, there will always be a way... But it seems that we can't do anything, so we are so entangled."

Previously, the media reported that the average annual income of young animators was only 1.11 million yen, and some people at the scene mentioned the harsh working environment and low pay on the production site. Anno said, "This is because the disc software cannot be sold," which led to difficulties in the business model.

"Whether it is TV animation or theatrical animation, it costs a lot of money. Theatrical animation costs hundreds of millions, so it is difficult to raise funds and it is also difficult to make a profit. The current production committee hopes to estimate the approximate sales of discs to recover the production costs, but now the discs can no longer be sold." There are many reasons why they can't be sold, but the most important one is "the thoughts of animation fans." Anno hopes: "You must have love for animation. Anime fans must have the feeling of wanting to watch a work, wanting a work to continue, and wanting such a work to be produced, then everything can begin. So first of all, love is needed." To put it bluntly, the animation produced must be accepted by fans.

Since the event was live-streamed on NICONICO, some people asked, "What can we fans do for the animation industry?" Tetsu Amamiya said, "I hope that people who really love animation will join the industry." Anno also smiled and said, "What great words you said. I was moved for the first time in a long time." Finally, he concluded, "I hope everyone can understand that animation is simply fun."
