CATDOLL: Why is Dragon Ball so popular? Psychologists tell you the truth

According to the RecordJapan website, the super popular anime "Dragon Ball" created by the famous cartoonist Akira Toriyama is not only well-known in Japan, but also very popular in the world. Not only has it been broadcast as a TV animation in more than 40 countries, it was also adapted into a live-action movie by Hollywood in 2009, and the total sales of the comics have reached hundreds of millions of copies. Why is this work loved by people all over the world? Japanese psychologist Mr. Yoshito Naito analyzed it from a psychological perspective.

Mr. Naito Yoshito said that although the charm of "Dragon Ball" is reflected in many aspects such as the full personality of the characters and the complex and tortuous plot, the most resonant and nostalgic is the story setting. Although this work is mainly about fighting, it uses many scenes based on "Journey to the West". The martial arts uniforms worn by the protagonists and the settings of early empty-handed combat are full of classical elements, which arouse infinite nostalgia.

Humans tend to resonate with things they already know. A professor at the University of Washington once conducted an experiment in which he showed two groups of advertisements, nostalgic (for example, using natural photos such as grasslands and lakes) and non-nostalgic (using photos of high-rise buildings), to 159 respondents and asked them to choose their favorite group. The nostalgic advertisements were highly rated. In other words, if the background of Dragon Ball was set in the universe from the beginning, its popularity would probably be greatly reduced.

Naito Yoshito also said that the highly acclaimed "One Piece" is also based on the Age of Exploration from the 16th to 18th centuries. "Dragon Quest", one of the best-selling and long-lived game series in the history of games, also sets the protagonist as a legendary hero who rescues the kidnapped princess from the Dragon King. Using a familiar background as the story setting can make readers feel strongly involved, and can better understand the protagonist's feelings and resonate with them.
