CATDOLL: Netizens hotly discuss: Will the "JUMP" reader veto system erase the author's individuality?

Anime fans who often follow Shueisha's Shonen Jump must know that JUMP has always been the key to whether a comic can continue to be serialized through reader surveys. To put it bluntly, whether a comic serialized in JUMP can be preserved depends on the readers' preferences. This will lead to a problem. Many comic authors change their styles in order to be liked by readers. So some netizens have raised the question of whether the practice of drawing what readers want to see will make the cartoonists lose their creative personality? This question has also sparked heated discussions among Japanese netizens.

Netizens' opinions: Personality is not something that can be deliberately created, but rather something that naturally permeates through the work. Boys' comics are popular reading materials, and their main readers are junior high school students. Of course, they should focus on serializing lighthearted and funny comics. If they serialize comics that the author only cares about his own pleasure but no one finds interesting, it will lower the overall reputation of "JUMP".

Netizens’ opinions: Having a strong personal style does not mean having personality. Comics like "The Prince of Tennis" and "Majin Detective Brain Eater Nero" that cater to readers' tastes do have certain personalities. And the currently serialized "Haikyuu!!" is also a conscientious work. The characters slowly grow up through carefully designed developments. Just like "World Trigger", every character is smart but each one is different.

Well-selling comics are those that concentrate a variety of selling points that meet the needs of readers. It can be said that well-selling comics concentrate on the diversity of personalities, so readers are willing to pay for them.

Netizens’ opinions: Works that can be serialized in JUMP are all unique. Works that cannot be serialized are unique but boring.

Netizen’s opinion: I think the argument that “reader survey supremacy cannot bring out the author’s personality” is not convincing. Can a work that is very popular on “JUMP” not have personality?

Netizens' opinions: The reason why people think that JUMP has no personality now is because some people read a short story that ends in one chapter and feel that they have seen it somewhere before, and it is just another clichéd comic, and then they make a fuss about it. Short stories without personality are terminated after one chapter, and comics that can continue to be serialized after one chapter are very unique.

If you really want to read manga with a unique personality, you shouldn't read JUMP, but Monthly Aftermoon or Harta (the serialized magazine for "What's Up, Sakamoto?"). Even in these magazines, the styles of new writers tend to be closer to those of established writers.

Netizens’ opinions: Reader surveys are not the same thing as having or not having personality. If it is a four-frame comic or a daily comic series, it still needs to be based on reader surveys.

Netizens’ opinions: The only work that has such uniqueness and is so well-serialized is “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba” by Hibachi Sensei.

Netizens’ opinions: Originally, "JUMP" was not inclined to serialize comics that were too innovative. Back then, "Attack on Titan" was also intended to be serialized in "JUMP", but "JUMP" could not accept the style and plot. Later, when "Attack on Titan" became popular, "JUMP" regretted it so much.

Netizens’ opinions: Although the work has personality, it is not popular in the reader survey and cannot be serialized. After all, many immature works are submitted to the most famous magazines in the industry.

Netizens’ opinions: Works like "Death Note" and "Gintama" are very personal, interesting and sell well. It all depends on the author's skills.

Netizens’ opinions: In "Death Note", the author just writes stories that he likes. In fact, the setting is very non-mainstream, but this seemingly non-mainstream setting can become the mainstream among the mainstream.

Netizens’ opinions: The reason for this topic is that “the work is interesting” is a subjective feeling, while publishers measure the objective fact of “high sales volume”.

It seems that everyone also believes that as a manga magazine, JUMP's reader survey does not restrict the freedom of manga authors. In fact, as many people say, truly popular works are those with personality. Do you agree with this view? Let's discuss it together.
