The light novel "Re:Zero -Starting Magic Book" serialized by Torazo Sho in Dengeki Bunko has been decided to be adapted into a TV animation, which is expected to start in spring 2017. The novel has been serialized since February 2014 and has not yet been completed, with 7 volumes of single books released.

The story begins in an imaginary medieval setting, telling the conflict between humans and witches. The witch, Zero, sets out on a journey alone to find her companion who left the cave a long time ago to explore the lost magic book. On the way, Zero meets a beast mercenary who is attacked by a witch. The mercenary mistakenly takes Zero away with him as an ordinary human, and in a hurry uses magic to trap the witch. The mercenary realizes that Zero in front of him is also one of the witches. In order to get away from her as soon as possible, he escapes without saying a word, but is still found by Zero. After some inquiries, the mercenary finds out that Zero is not alone, so he agrees to Zero's request for him to serve as a guard, and uses this as an excuse to ask Zero to turn him back into a human after the matter is completed.

The two men who had reached a temporary cooperation headed for the capital, and on the way they met the witch who attacked them before again - Albas. After the fight, Zero easily subdued her. During the conversation, Zero heard from Albas about his lost magic book, and decided to let her go with him to the Zero Magicians to find the "sir" he mentioned. However, the village where the magicians were staying was attacked, and the group was forcibly taken to the capital by the magic of No. 13.
