The popular anime "My Teen Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, As Expected", adapted from the light novel of the same name, has just finished its second season. I believe many viewers must be in urgent need of stomach medicine after watching the last episode. Recently, a Japanese media interviewed Saori Hayami and Nao Touyama, and asked them to interpret the work.

Q: My Teen Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, As I Expected. The sequel has ended. Thank you for your hard work. This work will probably continue after the second season ends, but first let's talk about your feelings after finishing the last episode.

Higashiyama: In the first season, Yui gave me the feeling of a girl in love, but in the sequel, she often looked at things from a mother's perspective. I was surprised to see the last episode in such a setting. I read the lines of the last episode several times. I also discussed it directly with Mr. Wataru when dubbing, and then continued working.

Hayami: The beginning of the sequel focused on those outside the service club, but soon the focus returned to the three people. This setting is quite meaningful. And the ideas of the three of them are very "Oremono" style. Although they have different ideas, they are still pursuing some kind of fetters. So how will they find the way forward in the future? In the last episode, I think they have found the signpost.

Q: In this work, how do you two deal with Yukino and Yui?

Higashiyama: The plot of "Sequel" basically makes Yui's image farther and farther away from the first season. I watched the first season many times before entering the work stage, so I can also feel that my understanding of Yui is slowly deviating during the dubbing. The sound director asked me to start with the details, saying: "Before, Yui's lines were all spoken in the tone of Hachiman's wife, but next try to express it in the tone of a mother?" For this reason, my feelings for Yui also changed.

Hayami: In the second season, Yukino showed a lot of new sides that she hadn't realized before. She was troubled by the changes that had happened to her, and she put all her energy into these changes, so she was always in a state of difficulty adapting to the environment. In this regard, Yui and the others gave her a good guidance, which allowed her to slowly approach the core of the story.

I think I reconstructed Yukino when I was creating the character. I'm afraid Yukino herself doesn't really understand her own feelings. So I just need to express the feelings that arise at that moment when I dub on the spot.

Q: At the climax of the last episode, there was a scene where the three people rethought their current relationship.

Higashiyama: To be honest, I am very troubled. Even though I can understand Yui's feelings and ideal conclusion, I really can't imagine how she would say it and in what tone.

Now I have read the script again and I am surprised by the notes I wrote before. They include words like "smile, give up, confide, cry inside, joy, miss, sadness". And all these emotions need to be included in one line...

But during the performance, she didn't think too much, she just expressed her feelings very straightforwardly. I'm afraid Yui also thought a lot, constantly chewed on her thoughts, and then calmed down to say these words.

In the first season, there is a scene where Yui and Hachiman go to the fireworks festival. At that time, Yui, who usually looks silly, has already shown a side of her that has complex thoughts. I was quite surprised at that time: it turns out that Yui is also a girl with complex thoughts.

Hayami: Yukino said to Yui, "Yuigahama-san, you are amazing." Although I, who was dubbing the character, could not have the same feelings as Yukino, I couldn't help crying. I think this sentence contains all of Yukino's thoughts. If Yui hadn't been there, the Service Club wouldn't have been established, so I really think she is amazing.

Higashiyama: If Yui hadn’t worked hard to ease the atmosphere and save the situation, the Service Club might have already disbanded (laughs).

Hayami: At the moment when Yukino said this line, she felt that Yui was very dazzling. Yukino shed tears at that moment, probably because of this dazzlingness. So I think this line is very good. I think Yukino may have found the path she should choose when facing an unsolvable problem.

Higashiyama: Yui saw Hachiman and Yukino and realized that if things continued like this, she would have to leave. But she really wanted to date Hachiman. Even if this idea couldn't be realized, she at least wanted to continue the current relationship between the three of them.

In Yui's heart, there must be a feeling of "Don't leave me behind", as if crying out. She sorted out this feeling herself and said it in a peaceful way in the last episode. But at this moment, she witnessed the spiritual communication between Yukino and Hachiman. Although she knew it a long time ago, it still hurts to see this scene.

Hayami: When I was chatting with Wataru-sensei and Nao-chan, she once said, "Yui is here to say this for herself," and I was surprised. Although it's not right, she still said it. Although it's cunning, she still said it. At this point, Yui has also changed.

Q: The changes in the characters are really vivid.

Hayami: Actually, I feel like I am witnessing the daily lives of the members of the Service Club. And I work with this feeling. Therefore, I am purely curious about the future development. For example, if they meet again in a year or more, there will definitely be changes. So I also want to see their future.

Q: Do you think Hachiman has found his "true self"?

Dongshan: Maybe later. I will definitely find it later.

Hayami: I think the answer should be left to everyone to judge.

Q: So once again, what kind of work do you think "Oremono" is?

Dongshan: I feel like I gain insights through words.

Hayami: Yeah, maybe that’s the case.

Higashiyama: This work mercilessly exposed the parts of my heart that I tried to ignore, and made me realize what my true heart is. In the second season, Koki and Yukino realized some problems because of Mr. Hiratsuka's words, and they got the opportunity to re-examine themselves, and they felt relieved.

This is a kind of self-affirmation, making me realize that "I am not useless". Perhaps this work is an opportunity to change our values ​​and the way we look at things, giving us the seeds of "redemption".

Hayami: What I feel is "universality". Regarding the essential concept of the work, I believe everyone has an answer and can resonate with it. For example, if I did not participate in the work, but just occasionally saw "Oremono", I'm afraid I would nod and say, "I see."

Q: You two sang the ending theme songs for both the first and second seasons. The word "love" appeared in "Ebli Days" this time. However, in this story, the word "love" was not seen in the lines of Yukino and Yui.

Higashiyama: When I was in charge of supervising the lyrics for Episode 1, Mr. Wataru said the same thing. In the ending song "Hello Alone" of the first season, I remember that there were no lyrics that mentioned words like "like" or "love". But Episode 1 deliberately mentioned it. I think the reason for this is that the theme of "The Sequel" is "saying words that you can't say normally", so the lyrics are very suitable.

There is a line in the lyrics that goes, "If I tell you, 'I like you,' then the scenery and beautiful dreams I see now will all disappear." In other words, if you tell the other person that you like them, then the relationship you have worked so hard to maintain may be at risk of ending, but if you don't say it, it won't be the "real thing." This kind of entanglement is very much in the style of "Sequel."

Hayami: Yes, that's right. Even if you don't know the work, you will think "it's a good song" just by listening to the song. And if you combine it with "Oremono", that moment will shine like a noble gem.

The background of the creation can be seen from the lyrics, and if you incorporate your own mood and feelings into the song through "Oremono", it will be very shocking to yourself.

Higashiyama: The ending theme of episode 12, "Ebliday World - Ballade Arrange - Yui Solo Ver.", is also very important. The line "Please give me a gentle lie rather than the truth" seems very quiet, but if it is related to the plot, Koki said "I want the 'real thing'", and Yui responded with "Please give me a lie", right? But I think something will definitely happen in the future.

Hayami: There must be something!

Higashiyama: In the last episode, Yui asked Yukino, "Xiao Yukino, is this okay?" And her words were exactly "gentle lies". This is also what I hope everyone will hear from the lyrics.

Hayami: This scene fully conveys “Yui’s words” and it makes people’s hearts tremble.

Dongshan: It’s quite surprising.

Q: Now that the last episode has ended, do you have anything to say about the three members of the Service Club? Can you please introduce them?

Hayami: Personally, I would say, “Yuigahama-san, you’re very cunning.”

Higashiyama: (laughs). What I wanted to say to Yui from the beginning has not changed - "I will always be your companion, Yui, no matter what happens."

Hayami: What exactly was Yui thinking in the last episode?

Higashiyama: I could understand Yukino's feelings in the scripts for the first 12 episodes, but I felt very scared after reading the script for the last episode. Although Yukino understood Yui's feelings, she couldn't even control her own feelings.

So before episode 12, Yui and I had the same feeling - "I hope to protect Yukino."

Hayami: I have not changed what I wanted to say. I want to tell them: "Let's go eat hot pot together."

Dongshan: (Laughs).

Hayami: I originally wanted to tell it to Yukino, but it seemed difficult to do so, so I told it to the three of them (laughs).
