Every year we see a large number of new voice actors appearing in the industry, but those who can reach the level of Mayumi Tanaka, the voice actor of Luffy in One Piece, are rare. Recently, Tanaka talked about the issue of acting in an interview.

Tanaka first recalled an incident in the interview. When she was young, an animation director said, "I hate the acting of voice actors." Tanaka now believes that voice actors are just a type of actor. Voice actors just happen to use their voices to perform. However, animations usually have to be recorded within 3 or 4 hours, so there is a time limit, so the performance is best to be easy for people to understand.

However, if you want to survive in the industry for a long time, Tanaka believes that you still need to dig deep into the role. As you grow older, such training will make you more mature. If you don't have the level of acting skills to show your body, it won't work. In this regard, Tanaka cited Kusao Takeshi (Sakuragi Hanamichi in "Slam Dunk"), who she believes is a model of using the body to express acting skills.

Tanaka doesn't quite understand what idol voice actors are now, but she also said: "Idols basically mean youth. So when you are an idol voice actor, you must also imagine what you will look like in your 50s or 60s. If you want to be a voice actor, imagination is very important."
