CATDOLL: European and American netizens released an "anime otaku rating list" and it's hard to understand foreigners' tastes

There are a lot of Japanese animations, and the content and connotation are quite a lot. In addition to many popular animations, there are also many unpopular works. Among these unpopular works, there are also excellent works with relatively profound connotations, but they are not accepted by most animation fans for various reasons. So some European and American netizens divided Japanese animation into six levels according to the difficulty of understanding the content of the works, which also caused a discussion among Japanese netizens. Because the way of classifying works is quite subjective, it is a bit difficult to understand what the foreigners' standards are.

Animation level table:

Level 1: Normal Pleb

The works cited include: "Dragon Ball", "Attack on Titan", "Sword Art Online", "Naruto", "Code Geass", "Nisekoi", "K-ON!", etc. They all seem to be well-known classic works, and the content of the animation is also relatively easy to understand. But it is a bit strange that "Future Diary" is also classified in the civilian area.

Level 2: Outsider

Works: "Puella Magi Madoka Magica", "Kill la Kill", "Fate/Zero", "Monogatari Series", "Sailor Moon", "Gintama", "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure" series, "Gurren Lagann", "Cowboy Bebop", "Log Horizon", etc. The works here can be said to have more depth than the above.

Level 3: Weird

Major works: Ping Pong, FLCL, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell, and Ballet Uta. You can’t fully understand the meaning of these works by just watching them once, and the themes are often obscure and difficult to understand. Unless you are a senior anime fan, it is difficult to be interested in them.

Level 4: That Guy

Major works: "The Tatami Mythology Series", "Dream Inception", "TEXHNOLYZE", "Death Proxy", "lain", and "MONSTER". The animation works mentioned at this level are indeed quite profound... I feel that they are mainly brain-burning and curiosity-seeking.

Level 5: Outcast

Main works: "Cat Soup" and "Angel's Egg". To be honest, I really don't understand these two works. I always feel that if there is nothing to do with these two works, it is better not to watch them. "Angel's Egg" is an OVA animation produced in 1985. The original plan, supervision and script are: Mamoru Oshii, and the character design is: Yoshitaka Amano. The background of the story is set in another world where Noah's Ark did not find land. The animals on the Ark became fossils, and the protagonists are nameless boys and girls. Because the story content is quite avant-garde, it is also famous among animation geeks for not understanding it.

Level 6: Abyss (What a confusing category...)

Main works: The Idolmaster, Wake Up, Girls!, Starlight Paradise, Love Live!, SymphoGear, and Starlight Girls. I really don’t know what to say after seeing the last category. Maybe it means that these works are all bottomless pits? Once you get into the pit, it’s hard to get out...
