On December 19, Lu Yufei, a doctor of brain science at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, launched the first private children's film and television drama rating system - China's children's film and television drama rating standards (version 1.0) . Lu Yufei said that this rating system took into account the existing children's film and television drama standards in many countries such as the United States, and was guided by many experts such as Chen Xin, a psychology doctor at the University of Connecticut, and Li Duoyu, a well-known film expert. It was formulated according to age and psychological indicators, and passed the verification of existing research in "Child Development Psychology".

China's children's film and television drama classification standards divide children's film and television dramas into five levels: TV-K (2-6 years old), TV-G (6-7 years old), TV-7 (7-10 years old), TV-PG (10-14 years old), and TV-14 (over 14 years old). According to this classification standard, the levels of the 10 popular children's film and television dramas are as follows:

According to the ratings of the above cartoons, 600 parents tested their "cheating index" on the spot. Among them, nearly 30% of parents had a "cheating index" of more than 50 points, and let their children watch many inappropriate children's movies and TV series. What surprised many parents was that "Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf", which many 2-year-old babies have watched by heart, is only suitable for children over 7 years old, and "Boonie Bears" is only suitable for children over 10 years old .

"My two-year-old child has been cursing 'stinky bear' at home every day since he watched Boonie Bears. He also occasionally uses a (toy) machine gun to shoot at adults..." Ms. Qin said helplessly.

Media reports previously said that Boonie Bears, a popular cartoon on CCTV, contained more than 20 instances of uncivilized language in a 10-minute clip. According to incomplete statistics, in Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf, Big Big Wolf was hit by Red Wolf's frying pan 9,544 times and was electrocuted 1,755 times. Under the influence of these children's movies and TV series, there have been cases in many places where children have imitated the violent scenes in them, resulting in injuries.

Experts have made corresponding explanations for the classification of these 10 cartoons. Among them, "Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf" contains a lot of violent acts in a comedic form; "Boonie Bears" often has vulgar tones and words, and moderate violent acts, such as the use of bombs and guns; "Big Head Son and Small Head Dad" and "McDull, Ringing in the Sky" do not have any violent acts, any vulgar language, and no sexual scenes, and the plots have educational significance for children's parent-child relationships and social development.

Lu Yufei said that random surveys have found that children watch TV for an average of about three hours a day, with the majority of their viewing time being between 5pm and 8pm, with a small number of children even watching until 11pm or 12pm. During holidays, TV has become a "cheap babysitter" for many children.

"As animation enters the era of 'box office only' where violence is used to attract attention, many creators and investors add violence or adult content to their films to attract children's attention, which is heartbreaking," said Lu Yufei. "The low quality, vulgarity and violence of children's films and TV series today are not only poisoning children, but also the entire education environment in China."

Lu Yufei said: "Most of the film rating systems in the world are not set up by the government. The rating system we launched does not have the power to directly ban the broadcast of a film or animation. However, as the rating system spreads, films and animations that do not meet the standards will have no ratings and no one will buy them in audio-visual stores. They will be driven off the shelves, which will affect film and animation production companies and drive them to produce film and animation according to this standard, making this children's film and television rating standard have a real effect."

Lu Yufei hopes that the grading standards launched this time can become a social consensus under the leadership of the government and the cooperation of the private sector, and eventually become a practical and effective industry standard.

Experts: Some support, some oppose

Regarding the children's film and television drama classification system, Shi Dawei, member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and chairman of the Shanghai Federation of Literary and Art Circles, expressed different views. Shi Dawei believes that the introduction of a children's film and television drama classification system by the private sector may put children's film and television creation into a passive position. Children's film and television creation and cultural units should still take the initiative and consciously create some excellent children's film and television works for children and return to their original intentions.

"In addition, I am worried that the introduction of the rating system may arouse the curiosity of some children, causing them to download some children's films and TV shows that are classified as the highest level and are not suitable for them to watch. This may become a double-edged sword," said Shi Dawei.

Zhou Nianli, a professor at the Department of Early Childhood Education at East China Normal University, expressed her support for the classification of children's films and TV series. Zhou Nianli believes that after knowing the classification standards for children's films and TV series, parents will no longer feel embarrassed when picking up the remote control at home. "Based on the analysis of children's learning characteristics, the children's films and TV series we expect should be the most beautiful, kindest, and most imaginative."

In her opinion, children's films and TV series should not be infused with violence under the guise of "justice" and "bravery". "I think children's films and TV series should make more efforts to cultivate children in the following aspects, including respecting the rights of others, being tolerant of others, being polite, and putting the interests of the public above personal interests."

Fu Xiaoping, a parent-child education expert and a doctor at Fudan University, also believes that it is necessary to classify children's films and TV series. Fu Xiaoping believes that parents need to create a small environment for their children to grow up healthily. He particularly emphasizes that parents must watch cartoons with their children. He mentioned the cartoon "Boonie Bears", pointing out that many people think that this cartoon is full of swear words and should be stopped from being broadcast, and children should not be allowed to watch such cartoons, but "Boonie Bears" is a favorite of many children.

"My daughter also likes watching this cartoon and has learned a lot of words from it, such as the damn XX. She will use it when she is angry with her family. I once watched this cartoon with her. It describes the relationship between the lumberjack and the forest animals in a funny way. For children, the most interesting part of this film is that it is funny. They can laugh out loud in just 5 minutes," said Fu Xiaoping.

Fu Xiaoping said, "I think it is better to loosen up than to block. It is very easy for children nowadays to be exposed to cartoons, video games and other things. This means that even if parents take a blocking approach, it will not help." In his opinion, when children around are watching some popular cartoons or playing some popular video games, it is difficult for parents to completely isolate their children from these cartoons and video games. For example, he said that his family had never downloaded the video game "Plants vs. Zombies", but his daughter learned it in kindergarten and fell in love with the characters in it.
