Marvel's passion for "building a universe" - or "playing a big game of chess" - is still ongoing. The new digital version of the "Avengers" comic released recently not only reveals the life stories of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, but also connects "Avengers" 1 and 2, "Captain America 2", the TV series "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.", and even "Guardians of the Galaxy" together.
The new comic is titled "Avengers: Age of Ultron Prelude: This Scepter'd Isle", which tells the story of what happened after the final battle in New York in "Avengers 1". Loki's scepter fell into the hands of Baron Strucker, one of the leaders of Hydra - who first appeared in the end credits of "Captain America 2". While Captain America and Falcon are busy saving the world in Captain America 2, Baron is recruiting volunteers in a fictional Eastern European city of Sokovia to experiment with Loki's scepter. Twin siblings Wanda and Pietro Maximoff (who will become Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver) born in Sokovia volunteered to join the experiment, and the scepter unlocked their inherent superpowers.
This plot in the comics is consistent with the ongoing story line of the American TV series "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.", suggesting that Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are not "mutants" but "Inhumans" - one of Marvel's key films in the next phase - their ancestors were genetically modified by an alien race called Kree, and Ronan the Accuser in "Guardians of the Galaxy" is a member of the Kree. The comic, produced by Marvel's digital team Infinite Comic, can be downloaded from the digital comic website Comixology for $2.99, and the print version will be available next month.
