Chen Sirui said that he learned from his classmates that Central South University has such a course, and Teacher Xu Hai not only readily agreed to let him audit the course, but also specially arranged for him to serve as a classroom assistant.

In 2012, Xu Hai opened this public elective course at Central South University. As most college students have been exposed to the famous name "Detective Conan" when they were growing up, this course was "snatched" by students across the school as soon as it was launched. Its popularity is no less than those popular compulsory courses at Central South University.

"Detective Conan contains interesting chemical knowledge, and chemistry has a unique charm and is a good friend closely related to our lives." Xu Hai said that when he was studying abroad, he would watch Conan when he was bored, and at that time he was thinking about whether he should incorporate some elements of Conan into teaching. In addition, some open teaching methods in Europe and the United States have a great influence on his current teaching. It is because of this that he came up with the idea of ​​opening this course.

In three years, the class size of this course has been increased from 120 to 240, and each class lasts from 8 am to almost 12 pm. As this course is so popular, some students will take it again after taking it once, so Xu Hai had to add an elective course "Learning Science with Conan" based on this course.

"Teacher Xu's class not only teaches chemistry, but also provides a platform for everyone to communicate." Huang Wenhui, a junior student at the School of Energy Science and Engineering of Central South University, said that in the class on March 21, Xu Hai set up a classroom presentation session specifically for students, where everyone introduced themselves and showed their talents, so that students who choose this course can communicate more conveniently in the future.

"Teacher Xu will combine the plot of "Detective Conan" and try to explain it using chemical principles." Huang Wenhui said that not only is the content of the lectures interesting, but Teacher Xu Hai also lets students participate. For example, he lets students design their own chemical magic tricks and invites craftsmen from outside the campus to teach everyone how to make chocolate in class.

How is this most popular elective course at Central South University taught? One of the classes is like this. In the plot of "Detective Conan", there is a section that mentions fireworks. Xu Hai first introduced the main plot of the animation in his courseware, and then used this as a starting point to focus on introducing fireworks. He will first talk about the history of fireworks, then talk about the chemical reaction formula when fireworks explode, and then extend it to historical allusions and classic poems related to fireworks, introduce the origin of fireworks, etc. He will also introduce the chemical structure and composition of fireworks, flame color reaction and other knowledge from a professional perspective, making the common fireworks in life vivid and interesting.
